About the Role: Are you ready to take your career to the next level? We are seeking a passionate Senior Photonics Design Engineer to join our innovative team in Torquay. In this pivotal role, you will lead the development of cutting-edge fibre-optic products, including components, modules, and sub-systems for exciting markets such as industrial, aerospace & defense, and bio-photonics.
As a self-starter, you'll thrive in a dynamic environment where your initiative and expertise will shine. You'll work closely with a multidisciplinary team of optical, electronic, and mechanical engineers, contributing to projects that drive advancements in satellite communications, industrial sensing, and biomedical imaging.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop state-of-the-art optical and photonic components and systems using leading design tools and software.
  • Lead part of the team, setting objectives and conducting annual appraisals.
  • Contribute to a cohesive product development strategy that aligns with business growth objectives.
  • Engage actively in prototype builds, including fibre-optic splicing, mechanical/electrical assembly, and opto-electronic testing.
  • Develop and execute test plans for the functional and environmental verification of components and systems.
  • Support design modifications and engineering changes to enhance existing products.
  • Present findings clearly to both internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.


Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Degree in Engineering or Physics; a PhD in a relevant area is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in fibre optics, photonics, and general optics.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to tackle complex technical challenges.
  • Highly organized, capable of meeting tight deadlines while maintaining meticulous attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with design tools such as Zemax Optics Studio or similar software.
  • Adaptable to rapidly changing design requirements driven by customer needs.
  • Driven, self-motivated, and possessing a positive 'can-do' attitude.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
