Rising Star Shows Leadership Growth
Oscar Piastri has revealed a more assertive approach in his technical relationship with McLaren, following his impressive 2024 campaign that saw him secure two grand prix victories and eight podiums. The Australian, who played a pivotal role in McLaren's first Constructors' title in 26 years, has developed increased confidence in his technical feedback whilst maintaining his trademark measured approach.
Technical Partnership Evolution
"I know a little bit more of what I want from the team or from the car," Piastri explained in an exclusive interview. "Maybe now that I know some more people, I'm not as afraid to be a bit more pushy in what I ask for. But I have certainly not changed my personality."
This evolution in Piastri's approach comes amid significant technical changes at McLaren, with former Red Bull Chief Engineering Officer Rob Marshall making an immediate impact as Chief Designer. Team Principal Andrea Stella noted Marshall's contribution has exceeded expectations: "We have been impressed even more than what we expected."
Strong Technical Alignment
A key factor in McLaren's resurgence has been the strong technical alignment between Piastri and teammate Lando Norris. "Lando and I work very well together," Piastri emphasised. "We have always wanted very similar things from the car. So I think that's very useful for the team."
Marshall's Impact
Marshall's arrival has brought not only technical expertise but also a hands-on approach that has resonated throughout the team. "Rob brings fantastic human qualities," Stella revealed. "You can see him in the garage, often playing under the car, on the ground. Everyone appreciates his incredible knowledge and experience, but at the same time, he's hands-on."
Looking Ahead
With both Piastri and Norris confirmed for the next two seasons, McLaren's technical renaissance appears set to continue. The combination of Piastri's growing technical assertiveness, Marshall's expertise, and the team's collaborative approach suggests McLaren's 2024 success could mark the beginning of a new era rather than a one-off achievement.
