Formula 2 to get new F1-style cars

Formula 1 saw a major change in regulations in 2022, the biggest for many years. Formula 2 and Formula 3, meanwhile, stuck to business as usual, with a car design based on a four-year-old concept. But the organisation of the step-up classes to Formula 1 is about to change that.

Currently, all F2 and F3 teams drive the same cars, manufactured by Dallara. Now Dallara’s monopoly is set to be broken, with the launch of a tender to which manufacturers can apply to make the new-style F2 and F3 cars. Those that succeed in winning contracts should see their cars on the race track in the 2024 season.

F2 and F3 CEO Bruno Michel said: "We’re planning to introduce a new car because the present cars are at the end of their cycle; six years old. I think it’s always important that we get a car that is as close as possible to Formula 1 with a fraction of the cost."

Michel added that the new F2 and F3 car designs would not only resemble F1 cars in looks, but also in terms of performance and technology. As the technical regulations for these cars are still undecided, F2 and F3 teams will still drive the current cars in 2023.

This move means that the skills in demand for F1 cars are now likely to be in further demand by the F2 and F3 competitors. Given the current talent drought, this looks likely to push up wages, making it an exciting time to be working in the automotive sector.
