Furniture giant IKEA has announced a plan to pay its customers £35 to switch to a green energy tariff.
The Swedish company will offer £35 credit to customers who log into the IKEA website and switch to one of several low-cost energy tariffs being offered on the website from different green energy suppliers.
The innovative scheme forms part of IKEA’s partnership with the renewable energy platform Big Clean Switch.
Ingka Group, which owns IKEA, announced in April that it would invest €4 billion (£3.4 billion) to support IKEA’s transition towards using 100% green energy across its whole value chain by 2030.
Jon Fletcher, CEO of Big Clean Switch, said many UK households were paying hundreds of pounds more than they should for their energy bills because they assumed that switching suppliers would be a lot of trouble or because they didn’t trust the energy market.
Greg Lucas, Sustainability Manager of IKEA UK, said the partnership with Big Clean Switch was a natural extension of IKEA’s existing offerings: “Millions of homes across the UK are already benefiting from IKEA products and services that help to reduce waste, energy and water, as well as to save money, which is why we’re so pleased to be able to partner with Big Clean Switch and help our customers switch to green energy suppliers too.”
