Like most people who work in recruitment, I fell into it. Have I always loved recruitment? No, I haven’t. It’s a tough gig, whilst the highs are great and as a profession you can do very well financially, for every high, there are probably lots of knock backs, rejected offers or clients who decide not to hire your ‘perfect’ candidate or days when you simply go ‘CV blind’.

So what changed I hear you ask, the answer is I have changed.

With experience (over 20 years in the recruitment industry now – I know, I don’t look old enough right!), I have learnt and refined the art of recruitment, I have learnt that delivering an exceptional service to clients and candidates is paramount and I have learnt to roll with the punches.

I have learnt that relationships are key. Being a trusted, normal, humble human being is what it’s all about for me. People need people in life and ‘whilst it’s nice to be important, it’s important to be nice’.

I have learnt there is no shortcut to success, each day I give work my best shot and try to be the best person I can be. Earlier in my career recruitment was just a job, now it is something that I am passionate about. I understand others may not share my passion and that’s okay. I understand that what we do in recruitment isn’t rocket science or a life-saving activity, but for some, it can be life-changing. There is no better feeling than that of knowing you have worked your socks off to find the right candidate, supported the recruitment process with your client and candidate and placed the right candidate in the right role.

My role has changed now though, I am not as regularly at the coal face recruiting candidates (although I still do). My role now is to help others succeed and realise their full potential and this for me is my utopia.

I genuinely love my job. I don’t say this so my CEO reads this and thinks well of me. I write this because I realise how lucky I am to genuinely and passionately love what I do.

I love the people I work with, I love the relationships I have at work, at all levels, across all teams and I am very proud to be part of an organisation and a Leadership team that genuinely cares for its greatest asset - its people. I feel valued and trusted and for me, this is massively important. I can speak my mind and share my thoughts and so can everyone else. We don’t always have to agree and I am not always right. I believe I can and do make a difference and THAT is all I can ask for.

I wake up early each day wanting to go to work. If I have had a challenging day, I can dust myself off and live by ‘Tomorrow is a new day’.

We have some challenging times ahead, we all do. If we can all work together, be better than we were before and look after one another, I am confident we will be just fine.

“Choose a job you love and you'll never have to work a day in your life” – Confucius
