Red Bull to investigate mechanics who helped Lewis Hamilton at the Mexican Grand Prix

In the Mexican Grand Prix, Red Bull made a serious mistake, leading to a significant advantage for Lewis Hamilton.

An uncharacteristically slow pit stop prevented Sergio Perez from finishing second in his home race behind Max Verstappen. The second stop by Perez clocked in at 5.3 seconds, preventing 'Checo' from undercutting Hamilton's Mercedes.

Perez was switched to medium tyres by Red Bull as they sought to press Hamilton, who was on slower hard compounds. The race represented further progress for Red Bull's rivals Mercedes, as Hamilton's teammate George Russell took fourth despite Verstappen's dominance and victory.

Horner has confirmed the Red Bull team will review the error that denied Perez a P2 finish before the penultimate race in Brazil.

Horner told reporters “I think without the issue of the pitstop, I think Checo would have got the jump on Lewis," Horner told reporters. He added "We need to investigate what caused that. It looks like the nut actually stuck, or it wouldn't undo cleanly. But it was a great recovery from him. Again, very strong pace, but just not quite enough to be able to make the pass on Lewis. Unfortunately, he was 0.03 of a second off Hamilton when he wanted to get the DRS, and so he just wasn't quite within range."

As a result of Verstappen's delayed stop at the US Grand Prix, Red Bull has now made two mistakes in succession in the pit lane.

Despite Hamilton's best efforts, Red Bull showed the true dominance it possesses to battle back and overtake his rival for 2021.Horner has also expressed surprise at the Silver Arrow tyre strategy, which he believes cost the team the opportunity to win the last two races.

“We were quite surprised Mercedes went as conservative as they did with the medium/hard strategy,” he said following the Mexican Grand Prix. He added “I think we still had the edge but they would have been a lot closer. If you hear their drivers, they’re not very happy about the hard tyre. That’s the second weekend in a row they’ve put that tyre on and it’s cost them a victory. I was quite surprised at that."
