Mercedes-AMG Makes Historic Return to Le Mans After 26-Year Absence
In a momentous announcement for motorsport enthusiasts, Mercedes-AMG has confirmed its return to the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans and the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) for the 2025 season. The German manufacturer will partner with the experienced Italian racing outfit Iron Lynx to field two Mercedes-AMG GT3 cars in the LMGT3 class, marking their first appearance at Circuit de la Sarthe since 1999.
A New Chapter in GT Racing
The return of the three-pointed star to Le Mans represents a significant expansion of Mercedes-AMG's customer racing programme. Christoph Sagemüller, Head of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport, expressed his enthusiasm about the comeback: "It's no secret that we've been very keen for some time to bring the three-pointed star back to Le Mans. The 2025 season with the FIA WEC entry is the right moment – we are returning to the Sarthe after 26 years!"
Technical Preparations and Requirements
To compete in the LMGT3 class, Mercedes-AMG must meet specific FIA WEC homologation criteria:
• Integration of drive shafts with torque sensors
• Comprehensive development work
• Wind tunnel testing to ensure compliance with championship performance windows
Mercedes-AMG Motorsport has already initiated these necessary modifications, with completion scheduled well before the 2025 season opener.
Strong Competition Awaits
The LMGT3 class, which replaced the LMGTE category in 2024, features an impressive roster of manufacturers. Mercedes-AMG will compete against:
• Aston Martin
• BMW
• Chevrolet Corvette
• Ferrari
• Ford
• Lexus
• McLaren
• Porsche
Looking Ahead to 2025
The 2025 FIA WEC season will kick off with the Qatar 1812 Km on 28 February, building up to the crown jewel event - the 93rd running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans (11-15 June 2025). The partnership between Mercedes-AMG and Iron Lynx brings together German engineering excellence with Italian racing expertise, creating high expectations for their performance in the eight-round championship season.
This return to Le Mans not only marks a significant milestone for Mercedes-AMG but also adds another exciting chapter to the storied history of the world's most famous endurance race. As preparations continue and the 2025 season approaches, motorsport fans worldwide eagerly await seeing the iconic Mercedes star once again gracing the Circuit de la Sarthe.
