Awel y Môr Offshore Wind Farm is given the go-ahead

The go-ahead has been given for an impressive offshore wind farm off the coast of north Wales. This wind farm will be capable of powering at least 500,000 homes. By 2030, the wind farm is expected to be in operation. The project will be named Awel y Môr Offshore Wind Farm. 

Around fifty turbines will make up the wind farm, providing a huge height of over 300 metres high. This actually makes the wind farm one of the biggest renewable energy projects in Wales. On top of powering half a million homes, it will also generate hundreds of job roles, making it a positive for the economy as well as our environment.

Following the go-ahead from the UK government, the developer is now waiting to be granted a marine licence to progress the project into construction.    With this in mind, the developer is also preparing the local supply chain. Businesses who are interested in joining the supply chain are encouraged to sign up for RWE’s supplier transparency engagement programme.

The clean and renewable energy which will come from the new wind farm is a milestone achievement in achieving greener solutions for our planet.

In the past, Wale’s original floating offshore wind farm was delayed due to the government's scheme failed to provide enough funding to make it worth the investment. The government's scheme failed to entice a single bid to build new offshore wind farms a huge blow to their net zero carbon emission ambitions by 2030.

In recent years, renewable energy businesses have stressed to the government that prices set for electricity are too low to allow for offshore wind projects to be viable during the increased costs and supply chain issues.

Awel y Môr remains right at the centre of plans for renewable energy generation. In order for the project to go ahead successfully, the UK government need to make sure there is a suitable CfD auction that is running effectively. On top of this, it needs to be able to unlock clean energy opportunities to widen the offshore wind portfolio for the economy. The UK’s supply chain services will play a big role in this. By broadening career opportunities within the renewable energy sector we can also get one step closer to achieving the net-zero aim for 2030.

North Wales will go on to play a pivotal role in clean energy infrastructure within the UK, as the government will continue to find green energy power generator solutions through further investments of up to fifteen billion pounds.
